This is what I imagine Sewdonia would look like. |
"I kind of want to dress like Blossom and Six." That was pretty much my main motivation behind learning how to sew. I'll admit I have wanted to learn how to make my own clothes for much longer than that, but never had the motivation and drive to actually do it until then. Which is sad because I've had a teacher right at my fingertips since birth.
Turns out the skirt I fell in love with was actually a dress with a crop top on top of it. |
While watching Blossom a couple years back I fell in love with the high waist floral skirts that Six always wore. They were so fun and cute, how could you not? Now, I feel like I can't live without one. So, I set out to find one to buy. I first went to Etsy to see if I could find a vintage/retro skirt that was similar, but no dice. So, I set off to the mall to search the racks of H&M, Forever 21 and the like. I'd found some that were close and actually bought a couple but they weren't totally what I was looking for. That's when I decided it was time for me to get some sewing lessons from my mom. Her mom taught her and it's kind of cool to carry on the tradition.
That fabric is pretty darn close to Six's dress, isn't it? |
After much deliberation, and conferring with my mom I decided to use a pattern (Butterick B5613). At first I thought maybe I'd do a tutorial I'd found on Pinterest. But decided working off a pattern would ultimately be easier for me. And when it came to picking out the fabric I think I just got lucky that Hancock Fabrics had exactly what I wanted.
And now I'm all set to start my sewing adventure. Here's to hoping I don't have a similar experience to Lucy when she tried to sew her own dress in I Love Lucy or Denise when she tried to sew Theo a shirt in the Cosby Show.
